Dude Ranches Have Preserved the Traditions of the Old West
Dude ranches have preserved some of the traditions of the old West when cowboys first began to bring longhorns up from Texas to Montana. Those were the days when Teddy Roosevelt had his ranch in the Dakotas and stayed at Cyrus Eatons dude ranch as a kind of super dude. Granted some so called dude ranches have become little more than resorts where guests get massages, take sauna baths, swim in the pool and wear Marlboro hats, but others have hung onto true western traditions where they offer some challenging horseback riding adventures and a chance to help the owners round up cattle and do other ranch chores. A real dude ranch of the old school usually borders a national forest with wilderness close by and snowcapped mountains in view. It serves guests hearty meals with its own grass fed beef and fresh vegetables from its garden. The main lodge of the ranch should have a huge stone fireplace and a living room where guests can gather in the evening for some music and socializing if they feel so inclined. The guest cabins should be made of logs in keeping with the atmosphere of the past and they should fit in with the surrounding landscape. There should be dogs, cats and poultry as well as horses and cows. Another authentic touch is to have newborn foals from the ranch breeding program in a place where guests can easily interact with them.
